OUR METHODOLOGY
Physical Therapy By Dean Kannier
Manual Therapy
Manual therapy is the use of hands-on techniques to evaluate, treat and improve the status of neuromuscular skeletal conditions. It’s the cornerstone of our treatment philosophy because we feel human touch is an essential ingredient for successful outcomes.
Our clinicians have advanced training and apply a variety of different techniques with the ultimate objective of returning the patient to full activity. Manual therapies are generally designed to relieve pain and restore normal range of motion. These skilled techniques are the building blocks that allow the rehabilitation process to move forward for full restoration of strength, muscular endurance, and coordination.

Vertigo Gait and Balance
Our skilled clinicians are able to evaluate a variety of different balance and gait issues. For instance, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) can be easily detected and resolve in just a few treatment sessions dramatically improving a person’s life. We also educate and provide patients with a home program to keep their symptoms from returning.
For other gait and balance dysfunctions one must possess adequate strength, range of motion, sensation, coordination and balance. North Valley Physical Therapy balance training consists of exercise with the goal of restoring the ability to maintain one’s center of gravity over a stable base of support. Improved balance skills will enable the patient to adapt to a variety of environmental situations such as uneven surfaces, obstacles, steps and curbs. If you do happen to lose your balance, then you are better equipped to recover avoiding a fall.
Numerous conditions can produce gait or balance disturbances. Balance and the gait pattern which humans used to walk are controlled from the cerebral cortex as well as reflexes to and from the peripheral nervous system. An event such as a stroke which damages that part of the brain will often affect the ability to walk and even balance oneself. Vertigo is the sudden sensation you are unsteady or that your surroundings are moving. You may feel like you are spinning around on a merry go round or that your head is spinning inside. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common disorders that can cause Vertigo. BPPV is characterized by brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness associated with specific changes in the position of your head. It is most commonly occurs when you move your head in a certain direction, lie down from an upright position, turn over in bed or sit up in the morning. Moving your head to look up or look down also can bring about symptoms of BPPV.
Therapeutic Pool
Our therapeutic pool has an average temperature of 98 degrees meeting the arthritic guidelines for therapeutic benefit. In addition, our aquatic therapy is performed one person at a time allowing for privacy but more importantly a one on one experience. An integrated railing system allows for support and the ability to perform a variety of different exercises. To access the pool, there are stairs with a rail or a lift chair that safely guides you in or out of the pool. A natural salt water system is used which is easy on our skin and the environment. The pool is also vinyl lined making it gentle on the feet.
The buoyancy of water decreases the weight bearing load across the joints along with unweighting of the spine to allow for exercises that are otherwise too difficult to perform on land. The warmth of the water soothes arthritic pain, encourages muscle relaxation and allows for freedom of movement. Post surgical patients who have had back, shoulder, knee and hip surgery experience increased active range of motion and gentle strengthening that they were unable to perform on land. Core strengthening, flexibility, cardiovascular conditioning, endurance training, balance, weight loss and the benefits go on and on.
